Did you know that...
Palenville is America's First Artist's Colony
Palenville is the legendary Sleepy Hollow

Named by the Indians as The Land of Falling Waters,
our gentle waterfalls, pristine swimming holes and fairytale rock formations tell their own story as Kaaterskill Falls (NY State’s highest 2-tiered waterfall) winds up here in Palenville as an enchanting series of cascades and pools.

The Woodbine’s History
The Woodbine is one of the area's few remaining Inns and Boarding Houses that date from the 1800s. In its colorful past it has housed painters of the Hudson River Landscape School as well as the notorious gangster Dutch Schultz. The Woodbine has operated as a speakeasy, a flophouse, and a popular Jazz club. The house piano is signed "To The Gang at The Half Note” by Louis Armstrong's bandman Shorty Jackson.

You decide...
Does Henry the bartender still polish glasses and wipe down tables years after his bar has closed?  Does the honkytonk piano really still play tunes, long after all the jazzmen have gone?  Myth or not, the Woodbine’s spirit of hospitality, creativity and plain good times is ingrained in its woodwork, and we like to think we’re continuing that spirit, with the full approval of the generations who have gone before.

Addendum: a new life for the Woodbine.

Henry's not here any more.

He left when we completed renovations, knowing that the Woodbine was finally in good hands.

Thorough renovations have brought the Woodbine into the 21st century, and loving attention to detail has preserved its 19th century mystique.

What we now know is that the Woodbine has spirit ingrained in its woodwork. And as we add good times on a daily basis, the Woodbine flourishes and gets better and better. Like applying a regular wax to the beautiful wood floors, it increases in luster and character.

Lola in her starring roles...

Lola is the Barry Manilow "Lola"

not the Kink's "Lola".

She's the showgirl ... at the Copacabana ...
and of course, what Lola wants, Lola gets.

A sultry Lola as Lauren Bacall-
If you want me just whistle.
You know how to whistle, don't you?

Lola--She's got Bette Davis eyes...

The Woodbine's Black Lab mix 'Lola" is sweet and very playful. She loves other dogs and despite her size (she's a very big girl) she's very gentle and patient with small dogs and children.

Rescued at 7 months old  from a kill sheter in North Carolimaa, she is now 3 and  a half years old and enjoys walks in the woods, swimming in the creek, and meeting and being fussed over by all the good people who come through the Woodbine's doors.

A happy ending indeed!

Coming Soon! --Photos of Lola as 'Scarface'

She ruined her pretty face trying to encourage a critter out from under a log  who evidently made an enthusiastic bid for iife. Names being accepted are  'Scabby', 'Bruiser' etc, ---suggestions gratefully received!
